Daily Work Spotlight: Caleb McDill

Daily Work Spotlight

This series highlights conversations with believers who are pursuing excellence in their daily work while seeking to honor God in all they do. Through these interviews, we aim to show how faith shapes the way we approach our vocations, from the decisions we make to the way we serve others.

Each story offers a glimpse into the lives of men and women who see their work as more than a job. They are connecting faith to their daily tasks, striving to reflect Christ in their industries, workplaces, and communities. For our first spotlight, we are interview Caleb McDill, who serves as a project manager at Veritas General Contractors.

Tell us a bit about where you work.

I work for Veritas General Contractors located in North Raleigh. We specialize in custom home building, renovations, and full-service design-build solutions. With over a decade of experience through our sister company, MCG Amelia Island, we have established a reputation for quality craftsmanship, exceptional design, and unmatched customer satisfaction.

Tell us a bit about your daily work. What do you do?

My day-to-day is pretty evenly split between office work on on-site management. As a project manager, I am the one to create the budget, schedule, and handle the vendor relationships. On-site, I will make sure the vendors follow the plans and accomplish the project with excellence.

How does your work pursue truth, create beauty, and/or do good?

My work pursues truth in two specific ways, in relationships and work, especially as our company’s name is Veritas, Latin for truth. First, we deal with our clients and vendors truthfully. We are upfront and clear about our process and work, which is a rare and hard thing to do, especially in our industry. Second, we work according to the truth.

We design and build according to true principles, building science. It is super important to us that we build quality and long-lasting products. Whether that’s one wall, an addition, or a whole house, we strive to build with excellence and longevity, with our vendors, and for our clients.

In what ways are you reflecting the Lord’s character in your daily work? In other words, what characteristic(s) of God are you imaging as you seek to do your particular work excellently?

I would say in my day-to-day work, some characteristics of God that I reflect are excellence, trust, and attention to detail. God’s work is always done with excellence and perfection; we see this early in the Bible as he tells us that all that he made was good. God is trustworthy, and most of my job has to do with relationships. With my clients and vendors, I work hard to actively build those relationships through trust.

Finally, God has an eye for detail, he knows everything and never loses any of his sheep. In my work, I have to stay organized and slow down. Much of my job is quality control and making sure that our projects are on budget, on schedule, and being built exceptionally. This takes a lot of attention to detail, slowing down, and caring about little things.

How do you see your daily work as a direct response to the cultural mandate (Genesis 1:28)?

I think that building is a great way to exercise dominion over the earth and subdue it. I think that it is a beautiful thing to be able to take the creation that God gives us and build beautiful things with it. Things that help people and contribute to their flourishing here on this earth.

In what ways is your work meaningful as an expression of your faith?

God loves work so the work I do is part of my faith because we are commanded to do everything to the praise, glory, and honor of Jesus. I think that God uses work to bring people together and I think that he uses my work to show some of heaven here on earth.

What encouragement would you offer to someone who feels like their work is disconnected from their faith?

I would tell someone that God has you where he wants you and if you are listening to him, he can move you when he needs. God loves work, and whatever kind of work you have you can honor God with it. Doing whatever you do with excellence praises him and shows the people around you that you are Christian, because you care and because you work with a purpose. Even if your work feels mundane and boring, doing it in a worshipful and excellent way gives glory to God and displays his hand in your life.

Finally, I would say to be aware and pray earnestly that God will use your work to lead you to people he wants you to talk with, people he wants you to love, people he wants you to have relationship with, and people that he wants you to tell about his son Jesus.
